Aizawl: The Northeastern State of Mizoram will go to polls on November 7. The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the other four states along with Mizoram, the lone state of the region which will go to poll. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the dates of poll in five states and the single phase election will be held in Mizoram on November 7. The results for the elections would be announced on December 3 in all five states. The Chief Election Commissioner said that the term of the 40 seats Mizoram assembly ends on December 17.
The Mizo National Front (MNF) under Chief Minister Zoramthanga is currently ruling the state. ECI informed that Mizoram has 1,276 polling stations, out of which 525 polling stations are in urban areas while 751 polling stations are in rural areas. As per the data of the ECI, there are 667 voters per polling booth on an average. 95 polling booths are managed by women in Mizoram. The total number of model polling booths are 40. Webcasting is available at 638 polling booths, which is 50 percent of all the polling booths in the state. The ECI informed that the total number of voters in Mizoram at 8.52 lakhs. Out of the total voters 4.13 lakhs are male and 4.39 lakhs are female. The number of first-time voters in Mizoram has been put at 50,611.
In the 2018 election, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) won 28 seats, while the main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won six seats. The Congress party managed to win five seats, while for the first time BJP won one seat in Mizoram.
Mizoram BJP spokesperson K Laldinthara recently said that no one can form a Government in the state with the saffron party. The BJP leader claimed that many regional parties like ZPM and others are willing to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The ruling MNF is also currently a part of the NDA. But it has voted against the NDA during the latest no confidence motion in parliament on Manipur’s issue. The MNF said that they voted against the BJP government for its failure to handle the crisis in Manipur and they will give issue based support to the NDA. It should be mentioned that BJP swept the election to the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) in April this year by bagging 41 of the 99 village councils.
