On September 26, a 28-year-old man stabbed a 17-year-old girl for refusing to marry him in the streets of Nadapuram, Kozhikode. It was only after the local’s intervention that the minor was rescued safely and admitted to the hospital. The accused identified as Mohammad Arshad, was handed over to the police authorities; he has been charged under sections of attempted murder.

As per the reports, the attack was launched when the minor was returning home from a private college she studied in. The attack took place during the busy hours of the day, around 2 pm, at Kalachi Old Market Road. In the CCTV footage, it can be seen that the accused is running behind the victim as she tries to push him back.

The accused, Arshad, also allegedly beat up the girl before stabbing her. He used a knife to stab the girl, according to local reports. The CCTV footage shows that a man standing close by on a bike, after realising that Arshad was attacking the girl, rushed to her rescue. The girl was indeed rescued by nearby traders who intervened in time.

The victim, a native of Teruvamparambu in Kallachi, was going to get married to Arshad, a native of Vanimal, who returned home from Qatar recently. Eight months ago, the family of Arshad and the victim arranged their marriage and he moved to Bharat.

Later, the girl withdrew from the wedding due to a disagreement. The girl’s father said that Arshad used to threaten her over the phone. The girl’s family had shifted residences due to Arshad’s threats.

Following the attack, Arshad tried to escape the crime scene, locals and traders who heard the girl’s screams subdued the accused and handed him to the police. Nadapuram police reached the spot and checked the CCTV footage. The police registered a case of attempted murder against Arshad. The girl has four stitches on her hand and is undergoing treatment at Nadapuram Taluk Hospital.

During the altercation, P.P. Afzali, the owner of a store, was also injured.

The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident.
