International Lawyers’ Conference 2023: ‘Judiciary has been protector of India’s justice system’, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating International Lawyers’ Conference 2023 said that the Judiciary and Bar have long been protectors of India's justice system. He also said that the experience of legal professionals worked to strengthen the foundation of independent India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Lawyers’ Conference 2023 in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan. The inaugural event was also attended by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister said that the Judiciary and Bar have long been protectors of India’s justice system. He also said that the experience of legal professionals worked to strengthen the foundation of independent India.

PM Modi said that in the fight for independence, the legal fraternity has played a huge role. “Bharat completed 75 years of independence recently. In the fight for independence, the legal fraternity played a huge role. Many lawyers left their practice to join the independence movement. The independent judiciary of Bharat has a major role to play in why the world today believes in Bharat,” PM Modi said.

The conference aims to serve as a platform for meaningful dialogue and discussion on various legal topics of national and international importance, foster the exchange of ideas and experiences, and strengthen international cooperation and understanding of legal issues.

PM Modi congratulated the Supreme Court of Bharat for providing operative parts of the judgements in the litigant’s language.

PM Modi said that,” Language and simplicity of law is another area of the justice delivery system which isn’t talked about much… Earlier, any law’s drafting was very complex. We are trying to find solutions to this. We have taken the first step to simplify Data protection law”.

At the inaugural event of the ‘International Lawyers’ Conference 2023, Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal talked about Indian statutory provisions which ensure ‘ease of doing business’.

CJI DY Chandrachud said, “…India has a relatively infant law for IBC and we have drawn extensively from jurisdictions such as UK, US, Australia, Singapore… knowledge sharing is a two-way street with Indian Supreme Court being regularly cited by foreign courts…India has played a pivotal role by constructing the Supreme Court buildings in Mauritius and Bhutan. Recently, I had the privilege of signing an MoU with the Chief Justice of the Singapore Supreme Court.”

The conference, which is being organised for the first time in the country, will discuss topics such as emerging legal trends, challenges in cross-border litigation, legal technology, environmental law etc.
