On September 20, a spurned lover in Ambedkarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, resorted to violence, fatally stabbing the grandfather of the woman he was once romantically involved with. Both the young man and the woman come from the Muslim community. The girl had chosen to end her relationship with him in order to marry someone else; enraged by this, the young man committed the tragic act. In the aftermath of the assault, enraged locals took matters into their own hands, subjecting the assailant to mob justice and the accused eventually died.

The accused has been identified as 25-year-old Mohammad Asim and the victim as Ayesha Noor. The deceased is identified as 70-year-old Ghulam Ahmed. The victim lived in the Jhajhwa village, which falls under Hanshwar police station limits. Whereas the accused was a resident of Nonara village.

As per the reports, Asim was allegedly stalking the woman and barged into her house with his accomplice. After entering the house he found Ghulam, who stopped him from meeting Ayesha, angered over this he stabbed him multiple times with a knife. While he was inside the house, one of his friends Salman was waiting outside the house. As soon as Ghulam screamed, Salman fled the scene.

After Asim attacked Ghulam, all his family members assembled and started beating him. Soon a mob came out and lynched Asim, someone called 112 and then the two were rushed to the hospital, where the doctors declared them dead.

Reportedly, Asim and Ayesha were in a relationship, however, the two had broken up a month ago. Ayesha told the accused that she was getting married to someone else. Despite the breakup, Asim continued to allegedly harass her. If the woman’s family were arranging her marriage forcefully due to caste issues is yet to be tracked.

The woman’s father Hilal Ahmad, registered an FIR against Asim and Salman at the Hanswar police station on September 20. Both the accused have been booked under IPC sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 324 (causing hurt by use of dangerous weapon).

Also, the Ayodhya Range Inspector General (IG) Praveen Kumar said that Mohammed Asim entered the woman’s house somewhere around 1:30 at night and that he did not forcefully enter the house, someone had opened the door for him. Prima facie it looks like after the family found an intruder inside the house they attacked him, in order to protect himself, he stabbed Ghulam multiple times. He allegedly injured the woman’s mother Tehsib Fatima and father Hilal Ahmad as well.

IG Kumar further informed that the local villagers soon gathered at the spot and caught hold of him. Asim was then tied to a pillar and thrashed, resulting in his death. Meanwhile, the three injured people are undergoing treatment at a district hospital.
