On September 19, a 40-year-old dacoit, identified as Shahbaz was killed in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh police. The police were taking Shahbaz to court for the hearing, in the meantime, he tried to flee from the police van. He also snatched a revolver from a Sub Inspector and started firing, in response to it the police fired back and Shahbaz was killed. He was arrested by the police under charges of murder and theft.

As per the reports, Shahbaz killed a professor identified as Alok Gupta on the intervening night of 18 and 19 September. Shahbaz killed Gupta at his residence, in Shahjahanpur while he was there to steal money. Gupta lived in the Karta area of the city and woke up after Shahbaz and his accomplice entered his house at midnight. When Gupta resisted, the attackers not only killed him using a knife but also gauged his eyes. Hearing his screams other family members came to rescue but the dacoits also attacked them, including women.

Despite their injuries, the family members managed to nab Shahbaz and Shahroz, but the other thugs managed to flee. The body of Gupta was transported for a post-mortem as soon as the police learned of the incident and arrived on the scene. Children aged 3 and 4 who were hurt were also admitted to the hospital for medical care.

Following the incident, tensions gripped the area, and some protesters stopped the ongoers. On the family’s complaint, the authorities launched an investigation. For the fugitives, a Rs. 75,000 reward has been offered. To capture them, numerous police teams have been sent out. Shahbaz was wanted in connection with the murder of another narcotics dealer, the police informed.

Shahbaz was later arrested and the officials were taking him to present him before the magistrate. While doing so, an animal crossed the way and the driver lost control of the vehicle, taking advantage, Shahbaz snatched the revolver and tried to escape. He opened fire at the police and in response police also fired a bullet at him. He was taken to hospital where he passed away. Shahroz who is presently in police custody is being interrogated and additional legal processes are underway.
