One person was reportedly killed on May 24, 2023, and two others were injured in separate incidents in the Bishnupur District of Manipur.
Official reports state that miscreants from a particular community torched three houses at Phoubukchao in Bishnupur on May 23, 2023, in retaliation, some youths of other communities burned down four houses.
Reports say armed youths raided some villages in Moirang, Bishnupur District early on May 24, 2023. On hearing the ruckus, some relief camp inmates at Moirang came to see what was happening.
One youth named Toijam Chandramani of Churachandpur Thengra Leikai was struck in the back by a bullet which exited from the chest.
He was taken to a nearby private hospital in serious condition and reportedly succumbed to the bullet wound on the way. There was tension near the hospital where the injured youth was brought, but the police and security personnel managed to control the situation.
Manipur has been experiencing stray incidents of violence since May 4, 2023, following a confrontation that occurred among some persons on May 3, 2023. Though an indefinite curfew was imposed and internet services were suspended, reports of continued violence have been reported.
The state has requestioned several companies of Central Forces to control the violence. Chief Minister N. Biren, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that his government sought twenty more companies of the Central Security Forces to cope with recurring violence in some areas.
