On May 18, 2023, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, reiterated his vow to continue the crackdown on illegal madrasas in his state and asserted that three hundred more madrasas would be shut down.
“There was a meeting between the BJP and the people who run these madrasas. There is a consensus that the three hundred more will be closed down. This is the result of the discussion between the Assam Police and the Qaumi organisations.”
While addressing the BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) Vijay Sankalp Yatra in Belagavi in Karnataka, Sarma said, “I have closed 600 madrasas, and I intend to close all the madrasas because we do not want madrasas. We want schools, colleges, and universities.”
In 2020, Sarma introduced a controversial law in Assam according to which all the state-run madrasas were to be converted into regular schools that impart general education.
On August 4, 2022, a madrassa in the Morigaon district was destroyed following the arrest of a teacher for his alleged involvement with terror groups.
On August 29, 2022, a madrassa in Barpeta District in Assam was demolished after the Superintendent of police Amitava Sinha claimed it was built illegally on government land. The police also alleged that two terrorists from Bangladesh affiliated with Ansarullah Bangla Team and AQIS (Al- Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent.)
On August 31, 2022, a madrasa in the Bongaigaon district of Assam was demolished after the administration issued an order claiming that it was structurally vulnerable and unsafe for human habitation.
On September 7, 2022, a madrassa was closed in the Goalpara District of Assam.
As of January 2023, Assam has three thousand registered and unregistered madrasas. The madrasa education was introduced into the Assam Education curriculum in 1934, and the State Madrasas Board was created then
On March 17, 2023, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that he had closed 600 madrasas in Assam.
