On May 1, 2023, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) of Iran reported that the Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ali Shamkhani, said Iran is keen on increased use of the Indian Rupee and Rial in trade with India.

The National Security Adviser of India (NSA), Ajit Doval, in Tehran, said that the use of national currencies in bilateral trade between India and Iran would help both countries reach joint economic objectives.

According to the IRNA, Shamkhani and Doval discussed various issues, such as economic, political, and security issues regarding India and Iran, including significant regional and international developments in the meeting.

The improved Indo-Iranian ties are not against any other country and are not bound by the will of third parties; Shamkhani underlined that the global and regional developments had created bonhomie conditions which will help in the strengthening of interactions between the two countries in the field of energy, transportation, banking and technology.

As per the IRNA, Shamkhani welcomed the role and significance played by India at regional and international levels.

He also highlighted that Iran considers the active participation of India in political, economic, and security measures, along with the active involvement of the Central Asian countries and the Persian Gulf region, as necessary and helpful.

NSA Ajit Doval added that the recent agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore diplomatic ties would have a significant regional impact on the ever-changing relations in the international system.

Emphasising the need for collaboration and cooperation between India and Iran to boost stability in Afghanistan, an Indian official said that both nations should work together to eliminate Takfiri terrorism in the country, IRNA reported.

Ultimately, Doval asserted that the Chabahar Port in south-eastern Iran is an essential gateway for increased cooperation between India and Iran.
