Guwahati: Assam Government has decided to send 300 alcoholic police personnel on voluntary retirement (VRS) soon. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also in charge of the home department, announced it on April 30.
Although several warnings were given to those police personnel who performed their duty under the influence of alcohol, the Government of Assam has decided to offer voluntary retirement to 300 police personnel across the State.
Around 300 officers and jawans will be offered retirement under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) as they had performed their duties under the influence of alcohol that was of no use, keeping in view the security of the citizens, CM Sarma Said.
All these officers and jawans of the police are habitual drinkers and repeated warnings went in vain to authorities to control their drinking habits.
As per the VRS scheme, they will be receiving their pension. In addition, it would give opportunities for aspirants to apply in the police department as several posts will go vacant following retirement, CM Sarma informed.
He also said, “There are about 300 officers and jawans of Assam police who are habitual drinkers and consumption of too much alcohol has damaged their bodies. The number was decided after much scrutiny. Now the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) is the last option and the State Government will do it.”
CM Sarma also mentioned that this is not a new policy and was always there in the security forces, but we have yet to implement it in Assam earlier. We are now going to work on this. There is a government rule that they will go to VRS, and new recruitment will occur.,” he added. It should be mentioned that the Assam Government recruited 6000 police personnel in 2022 and planning to recruit another 7000 by 2024.
