A girl consumed poison after her Muslim boyfriend pressured her into marriage in Khudel police station area of Indore on April 19. The deceased girl’s family has alleged a case of love jihad. However, even after having the ‘Anti-Conversion’ law in place, the accused has only been booked under charges of Abetment to suicide.

Accused Asad Hussain, a resident of Kazi Palasia wanted to marry the girl and he was pressuring the girl and her family members regarding the same. Fearing Asad might hurt her family members, the girl consumed poison on April 18.

Hussain studied with the victim

According to SP (Rural) Hitika Vasal, the girl student and the accused Asmat studied in the same school. During this, Asmat Hussain befriended Jaya by persuasion. After a few days, he started pressurizing her for marriage and conversion. When the student took admission to Art and Commerce College, AB Road, Asad started following her there too. He used to stop Jaya on the way and used to force her to marry him. Due to her fear, the student stopped going to college.

The family knew Hussain followed Jaya

Jaya told her family about Hussain since the time he started following her. Instead of taking the help of the police, her parents remained silent for the sake of respect. This boosted Asad’s spirits. He started harassing and threatening her even more and more. She was feared so much that she would go to college once in 15 days, changing the time and day. Asad still did not stop following Jaya.

Asad used to text and call the victim

On April 18, the accused Asad sent some messages on the phone of the girl’s uncle. When the student took the phone, he sent some more messages and deleted them immediately. Troubled by all this, Jaya went to the room after a while and consumed poison. When the condition worsened, her family took her to Index Medical College and then Bombay Hospital at around 11 pm. However, Jaya died at around one o’clock in the night.

Asad said he will take Jaya away with him

Jaya’s father told the media that his daughter was upset because of Asad. He used to threaten her that he would defame him by sharing stuff (morphed pictures) he had. Once he (the father) was also stopped on the way by Asad and he said that “I will pick up your daughter and take her away”.

Jaya’s father also told Asad’s father Shabbir, and grandfather Haider about the incident, but they did nothing. Jaya’s father works in a chocolate factory. He did not complain to the police out of fear.

Hussain’s family are also named accused

According to ASP (Rural) Shashikant Kanakne, the police also named Asad’s father Shabbir, grandfather Haider, and mother as accused. Along with Asad, his father Shabbir has been arrested now. Asad’s phone has also been seized.

They have been booked under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide), 294 (obscene songs) and 506 (criminal intimidation). No sections for the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act has been imposed against the accused.

The accused was presented before the court on April 19. The victim’s family also recorded their statements under section 164 of the CrPC.

Activists demand action
