Another Hindu woman lost her life fearing threats from an Islamist in the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. In the recent case, Mohammad Shahrukh posed as Sourabh to trap the woman and later started blackmailing her, when she refused to continue her relation learning his true identity.

Police arrested the accused Shahrukh on April 14. The accused has been booked under sections of the Uttar Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act.

The accused wanted to have ‘Conversion–Nikah’

A First Information Report (number–38/2023) was registered at the Harbans Mohal police station of the Kanpur (East commissionerate) district on April 14.

As per the complainant, Girdhari Kashyap, a resident of Kanpur Nagar, on April 12, his younger daughter called him and informed that his elder daughter Renu has hanged herself. He rushed home and took Renu to KPM hospital, where the doctors declared her dead.

After her death, when they questioned Renu’s younger sister strictly she said, Renu told her that a boy named Shahrukh has been threatening Renu for a long time now.

Renu was in a relationship with a boy named Sourabh for years. Two weeks ago she found that he was not a Hindu and his name was Mohammad Shahrukh. He sexually exploited Renu posing as a Hindu boy.

He was forcing her to have a ‘conversion–nikah’ with Renu or else he would tell her brother and the whole village about her. He was blackmailing Renu by sharing their intimate pictures on social media.
Police arrested Shahrukh

The Kanpur police arrested Shahrukh son of Bablu Salmani on April 14 from the Bhusatoli area. The accused has been booked under IPC section 306 (Abetment of Suicide) and sections 3 / 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021.

Renu’s brother Arun Kashyap told this correspondent on April 18 that his sister has become a victim of ‘Love Jihad’. Asking what does he mean by this term he said, the news reports tell that when a Muslim boy traps a Hindu woman in hiding his identity for marriage and then conversion, such fake relationship is called as Love Jihad.

He said, they were unaware of the relationship between this boy and Renu. The boy lived in the Muslim basti located next to their colony. The whole family learned about him only after their younger sister Reshu tell them about him.

Arun’s father does a private job, so does Anuj. He works at a mall in Kanpur to support his family. They were four siblings including Renu.

He added, last month they finalised Renu’s wedding with a boy from their own community. The family asked Renu if she liked the guy or not, everything was fixed, they were planning to organise the wedding by the end of summer but this happened all of sudden.

Asking about Renu’s relationship with Shahrukh, Arun said, he stands by her sister and no one can point a finger at her. That boy deserves punishment for blackmailing my sister, he said.

Three other suicides in this month

On April 4, A 20-year-old woman identified as Manorama Devi killed herself after stalker Mohammad Shamshad threatened her. Manorama who belongs to the Harijan jati was getting married to a man from her community the next month.

However, Shamshad never approved of the alliance, he barged into her house and tried to attack her. When one of her brothers went to register a police complaint he threatened of killing him as well, ultimately Manorama quit.

In another case, a BSC student in Kumhdiya Behta village of Sadh police station area also committed suicide by hanging herself on April 4. She was fed up with molestation. Her father told that Rahul, son of Laxmikant Tiwari, a resident of Kumhadia village, used to harass his daughter since Holi.

He used to harass her by morphing photos from her Facebook profile. He used to send obscene messages to his daughter on daily basis and used to make obscene comments along with following her whenever she left the house.

In the third case, Kavita (24), a resident of Sant Lal Ki Bagiya also committed suicide by hanging herself on April 4. The family alleges that Raj, a boy from the area, was following her and was pressurizing her for a video call. Due to this, his daughter committed suicide by hanging herself. Kavita was the youngest of three sisters.
