Tamil Nadu police has arrested the ruling DMK’s Virudhachalam Municipality 30th Ward Councilor Pakkirisamy on charges of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl.

The councillor, a native of Virudhachalam near Mettukkuppam in Cuddalore district, who runs a nursery school in Shakti Nagar, was arrested last night on a complaint filed by the parents of the girl. Pakirisamy allegedly molested the girl who is studying at his school on Tuesday (11th April). The five year old girl on reaching home from school evening told her parents of severe pain in her stomach and private parts.

Her mother took her to a private doctor. After examining her, they told the girl’s mother that she had been sexually assaulted. The girl narrated what had happened to her. The girl was admitted to the Virudhachalam general hospital.

The incident echoed in the state assembly with leader of the opposition Edappadi K Palaniswamy moving a special call attention motion, CM MK Stalin said the school correspondent had been arrested. “ This government believes that those involved in offences against women and children are a shame on humankind. Strict action will be taken against those involved in such offences without any discrimination”.

The accused has been arrested under the POCSO act. Meanwhile, DMK general secretary Durai Murugan said Pakkrisamy had been expelled from the primary membership of the party for violating its principles and bringing disrepute to the party. Opposition leaders urged the government to book the culprit under the Goondas act.

The culprit was not arrested immediately after registering a case. Only after opposition raised the issue in the State assembly, police swung into action after getting green signal from the higher-ups.
