On March 30, 2023, Dunya News (Pakistani Media) reported that Dr Birbal Genani, an eye specialist and senior director of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation was shot by unknown assailants in Layari, Karachi.

As per Geo News (Pakistani Media Agency), after receiving information regarding the incident, the police and rescue officials arrived at the site and took the injured victim and the doctor to the hospital. The CCTV footage of the incident shows Dr Genani’s car moving uncontrollably and smashing into a wall.

According to the police, Birbal and his assistant lady doctor were travelling to Gulshan-e-Iqbal from Ramaswamy when an unidentified man targeted their car near Garden Interchange on Layari Expressway. Dr Birbal died at the spot while the lady assistant sustained bullet injuries.

Speaking to a group of reporters, the Senior Superintendent of the Karachi Police, Arif Aziz, said that the murder of Genani was a ‘target killing.’ He further added that the exact reason behind the murder is not known yet.

Citing the Injured lady assistant, a police officer said- “Firing began suddenly and I couldn’t understand anything.” He said that there was only one bullet mark on the vehicle as per the Geo News Report. The police said that they are recording the lady doctor’s statement.

The police officer has said that they are launching an investigation into the murder. The Governor of the Sindh Province, Kamran Khan Tessori sought a report regarding the incident from the Additional Inspector General of Karachi Police.

In addition, he expressed sorrow over the murder of the eye specialist.

The Express Tribune, a prominent newspaper in Pakistan reported that in the previous week, Hindu Shopkeepers were assaulted in Pakistan for violating the Ramzan Ordinance by eating.

In a video that went viral on social media, a policeman armed with a stick began to thrash the Hindu restaurant owners and men who were preparing the biryani for delivery orders in the local market.

“I Swear that I belong to the Hindu Community and he is taking away food. We do not run the dining service indoors during Ramzan.” a man arrested by the police said according to Express Tribune.

As per a news report, the SHO, however, publicly forced the restaurant owner to take an oath on his sacred book. He tortured, harassed, manhandled and arrested more than a dozen people including Hindu shopkeepers after physically assaulting them.
