Bangladesh: At least 14 Hindu temples vandalised in Thakurgaon

Unidentified people vandalised 14 idols at 12 Hindu temples under Baliadangi upazila in Bangladesh’s northern District Thakurgaon on February 5.

The temples are located at Dhantala, Paria and Charul Unions in the Upazila, said Khairul Anam, officer-in-charge of Baliadangi police station.

The police are trying to arrest those involved in the incident, he said.Upazila nirbahi officer Bipul Kumar said that the temples in the three unions were located on the roadside and looked almost vulnerable.

‘The incident took place last night. We visited the spots. The deputy commissioner and the police superintendent also visited the places,’ he added.

‘We talked with the local Hindu community and asked them not to panic.
Additional security measures have been taken. The situation is under control now.’

Charul Union Parishad chairman Dilip Kumar Chatterjee said some unidentified people vandalised the idols.

‘On information, I reached the spots in the morning and later informed the local administration of the incident,’ he added.

Dhantala union Puja Ujjapon Committee general secretary Jotirmoy Singh said, ‘We have been offering Puja in the temples for about fifty years. No untoward incidents took place during the years. We demand justice and immediate arrest of those involved in vandalism.’

DC Mahbubur Rahman said that the wrongdoers must be brought to light and given exemplary punishment following an investigation.
