A Muslim cook has been arrested for allegedly spitting in the dough before making ‘chapatis’ at a roadside eatery in Sahibabad area of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, police said on January 19.

The action was taken after a video went viral on social media. Police have lodged a criminal case against the cook — who has been identified as Nasiruddin of Kishan Ganj, Bihar — at the Teela Mor police station.

An FIR has been registered under 269 of the Indian Penal Code (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), Poonam Mishra, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sahibabad) Poonam said.

“Accused Nasiruddin has been arrested in the case & further legal action is being taken,” she further added.

The matter came to light after a video of Nasiruddin spitting on the dough while preparing Rotis went viral on social media. The roadside eatery was identified as ‘Madina Hotel.’

In the video, Nasiruddin was caught red-handed indulging in the unhygienic act. The man recording the footage was heard saying, “Why are feeding spit-filled rotis to people? Hindus might be eating it. Even Muslims might be eating it. What is the objective behind serving such rotis?”

Notably, this is not the first case of spitting on foods. Earlier, similar video has come out in Meerut, Ghaziabad and Delhi.

Earlier in April last year, a video of a man ‘spitting’ on rotis went viral on social media. The contentious video was posted by a local journalist and was purportedly shot during a wedding ceremony in Modinagar town in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

In March 2021, the Ghaziabad police arrested another man named Mohammad Mohsin, after a video of him spitting on rotis at a wedding ceremony, went viral on Twitter.

In March 2021, another man named Mohammad Khalik was arrested from the national capital after a video of him spitting on the dough while preparing rotis in a tandoor had gone viral on the internet. Investigation revealed that it was from Madeena hotel in North East Delhi’s Bhajanpura area. In the video, the cook was seen spitting on rotis before putting them in the tandoor.

In 2021 in yet another case of a cook spitting on rotis, Delhi Police arrested two persons named Mohammad Ibrahim and Anwar after a video of them spitting on rotis had gone viral on the internet. In the video that had gone viral, one of the two men was seen spitting on the rotis before putting them in a tandoor. It was then reported that the video was from a hotel in Seelampur in Delhi.
