The Northeastern states of India, like Manipur and Mizoram, which shares a border with Myanmar, are deeply affected by the influx and illegal drug trafficking.

Taking the issue of illegal Myanmarese migrants in Northeast, Organiser has recently published an exclusive article under the title ‘Attempt to make Northeast a hotspot of illegal migrants’.

The article was published on our website on December 24, 2022, alerting the Union and State Governments about the possible impact on the social, political and economical due to the ever-increasing illegal influx from Myanmar in Indian territory along the Northeastern frontier.

The article also urged the concerned stakeholders to beef up security and construction of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border.

A week after the article was published, the Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, discussed in detail about the Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing to stop illegal immigration and smuggling activities.

“Was called on by Col. G. Shankar, Offg Chief Engineer, Project Sewak for discussions regarding Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing works and the upcoming new road projects in the State of Manipur. Deliberated on the fencing works at the Indo-Myanmar border to stop illegal immigration and smuggling activities,” the Chief Minister informed in a Facebook post on December 30, 2022.

(The State Government is also constructing as many as 34 police outposts along the border to enforce the War on Drugs campaign. Discussions were also held on the implementation of various roadway projects to enhance connectivity and development activities in the state),” the Chief Minister informed in the post.

Since the Northeastern states have close cultural connections with various communities of Myanmar, the easternmost states of India are becoming the haven for Myanmarese illegal migrants.
