Guwahati: Islamic cleric issues fatwa against 11 Muslim families for joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karimganj district of Assam. As per the report, 11 families of Bishkut village in Karimganj joined the ruling party recently. But after they entered the BJP, other families in the town started attacking them. The cleric of the village issued a fatwa against the 11 families and the villagers boycotted them.

Abdul Rahim, who joined the BJP, recently said that around 200 people led by Abdul Matlab and Raqib Ali came to his house and attacked. They even tried to burn his house.

The families were barred from entering the village Masjid. Their children were not allowed to enter village schools. Matiur Rahman, who also joined the BJP, said that since his family joined the ruling party, they have been facing threats from the villagers. They were not allowed to roam on the village roads. He was thrown away from the village Masjid when he was there to attend the Friday namaz. Sonhar Ali, who also joined the BJP, said that the miscreants had put one bamboo fence in front of his house so the family couldn’t go to the village.

After the incident was covered in local news channels, police went to the village and took cognizance of the matter. The victims’ families have lodged an FIR at Karimganj police station.

The family’s request the administration to provide security and access to the Masjid and school. Local BJP leaders in Karimganj also demand immediate action against those threatening the 11 families who have joined the saffron party.
