Nagaon: Notorious drug dealer Habil Ali was awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a court in the Nagaon district of Assam after finding him guilty of drug trafficking. Nagaon District and Session Judge Nilkamal Nath also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on the convict Habil Ali; failing to pay, he will have to spend another 18 months in jail.

A team of Assam Police arrested Ali from his residence in December 2020 and seized brown sugar and cannabis worth around Rs 2.5 crore, along with more than Rs 10 lakh in cash from his possession.Reacting to the judgement of the Nagaon court, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, many people question us, what happens to the people arrested for drug paddling?Hon’ble Court decision regarding drug paddler Habil Ali will answer that. And mind you, this is just the beginning!

Convicted drug peddler Habil Ali has been sentenced to 20 yrs. of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 3 Lakh fine for possession of 2KGs Heroin, 100KGs Ganja, 1 KG Opium, and INR 10 Lakh. He was arrested in December 2020 at Dhing, Nagaon.

The ringleader of his gang – Hopkinson, a criminal mastermind from Manipur, was also nabbed after the arrest of Habil Ali, and he’s also being processed for conviction. DGP Mahanta added, “Let this be a lesson for all the people involved in drug trading. They will be ‘going in’ for a long time.”

It should be mentioned that the Assam government has been coming heavily on the drug trade for the last one and a half years. So far, more than 6000 drug traders and peddlers have been arrested by police. It is the first of such instances in which a notorious drug peddler was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by a local court in Assam.
