Tamil Nadu: DMK govt ‘secularises’ saint Vallalar by removing the sacred ash on his face in its releases and banners

The present Dravidian Stock government is trying to erase the identity of Ramalinga Swamigal, if its actions are any indications.

Ramalinga Adigalar, popularly known as VALLALAR by his followers, the Great Munificent, regarded as the foremost of the saints and ages of the nineteenth century. His 5815 poems within six Thirumaraigal or Arutpa (six volumes) which talks about divine inspiration, transformation and deathlessness of body etc. He said God is the incarnation of knowledge and mercy.  He started a centre to feed poor people with food which is still functioning at Vadalur where he in 1872 built a “Sathiya Gnana Sabai (hall of the True Wisdom forum) which is temporal now.  Here there is no offering of flowers and fruits. During his life, did a lot of miracles. He was a musician, medical practitioner, preacher of new cult.  He locked in a room at Mettukuppam and disappeared in 1874.  At his Vadalur sabha, sacred ash is being given as Prasad.  White dhoti is uniform for his followers.  He set up a community kitchen to feed the poor, which is functioning till date.

TN CM M K Stalin inaugurated “Mupperum Vizha” (three big festivals) to commemorate the bicentennial year of Vallalar. It is a 52-week-year-long discourses.  He issued a commemorative special logo, postal cover and poor feeding programme.

It is a million-dollar question as to why DMK and Stalin, who are staunch Hindu hater and against Hindu religion, took part in the function conducted by TN HR and CE department. They have successfully implemented their agenda like what they did for saint Thiruvalluvar. They changed his dhoti colour in white, removed sacred ash mark on his face and janeu.  The same way, Vallalar, who was seen all these years sporting with sacred ash, is now without the same in government’s releases, banners and statues. People at Vadalur told they have taken the cash rich Vallalar sabha and its properties a la land grabbing.  If we apply their principle, what was the role for a secular DMK government there”.

The irony is that Stalin has chosen this opportunity to project him and his government is not against Spiritualism. He said, “This Dravidian-model government is not against spiritualism and the people’s religious beliefs. But it is against those who are using spiritualism for political reasons and for selfish motives besides propagating discrimination among people. The people who know the religious culture of Tamil soil understand this well. I wish to reiterate this because a few people on social media may highlight the initial portion of my speech by cutting the later part, saying Stalin spoke against spiritualism”.  Without naming BJP and its outfits, he accused some used religion for their survival in politics and are running a campaign claiming that the Dravidian model of government is against spiritualism.

TN CM said, “I am saying it because a section of the social media could selectively use my speech and create an impression that I have spoken against spiritualism.  Let me say it clearly that the DMK government is not against spiritualism, but only against those who use it to fulfil their selfish agenda and spread social discrimination. Those who know the culture of religion in Tamil land will realize it. This programme is a surprise and shock to a few. For me, this will help disprove them and their claims”.

Recalling Vallalar’s life, Stalin said “Long ago, Vallalar told the world that caste and religious systems are not genuine and denounced them. Till the end of his life, Vallalar worked against discrimination of caste and religious systems and advised people not to engage in fights over them. It is the duty of the Dravidian-model government to spread his glory. Periyar EV Ramasamy published a collection of verses of Vallalar in the 1940s, and former CM M Karunanidhi established Vallalar Nagar in memory of the spiritual giant. The DMK government has declared the birth anniversary of Vallalar as Benevolence Day”.

He said “fulfilling DMK’s 419th electoral promise, an international centre for Vallalar teachings would be set up at Vadalur, the government has received suggestions from an expert committee. This centre would be set up at a cost of Rs 100 crore and construction will start very soon”.

He added that Rs 3.25 crore has been allotted for the year-long celebrations, including Annadan (mass feeding) for 52 weeks. The Mupperum Vizha also commemorates the 156th year of establishment of Dharmasalai by Vallalar to feed the poor, and the 152nd year of Jothi Darshanam.

Nakkeeran, an Indian scientist who opposes Dravidian stockiest, list out DMK’s Hindu phobic speeches and activities.  He said, “But there is no need for any organized campaign. The words uttered and the behaviour of DMK leaders show the inherent anti-Hindu mindset.  By vulgarly describing Hindu rituals in marriage at an Islamic event (Stalin), failing to take action against his MPs who insult Hindu sentiments and rituals, remaining silent about those who offend the Hindu faith, rewarding them in recent appointments, and forging relationships with Christian pastors who offend the Hindu faith, the DMK demonstrates that the party is anti-Hindu. There is a rising Hindu consciousness among the people which is what has pushed Stalin on the defensive which has made him say that his party DMK is not anti-religion. But the facts lay bare – the DMK and its leaders continue to be anti-Hindu.”  He also talked about an unsuccessful attempt to ban Pattina Pravesam of Dharmapura mutt, DMK MP kicking the sacred stone, stopping the foundation stone laying function, A Raja’s Sudras prostitute son comment, DMK MP Kanimozhi, its ally VCK Thirumavalavan’s rabid and hate speeches, YouTuber Minor Vijay’s disparaging remarks against Lord Nataraja and Thillai Kaliamman and so on.

TR Ramesh of temple devotees forum said it has now come to light the HR and CE illegally taken over the Vallalar’s Sabha. There is no record to prove when was the first EO was appointed. We urge the EO should go away. Government has to show the resources for the 100 crore project”.

“Mr Stalin, do not try to pretend you and party allies are not against Hindus and Spiritualism. It is another gimmick to hoodwink the people like what you are doing for Tamil language. The entire episode of your new-found love for Spiritualism is nothing but a more staged spectacle for your stooges. Don’t force us to bring out documentary and video clippings to prove anti-Hindu stand”, says Rama Venkatadri of Chennai.
