New Delhi: Gujarat has retained its position in the top category of ‘Best Performing’ for the third time in a row in the evaluation of all states and union territories for the prestigious ‘States’ Startup Ranking 2021’. As many as 28 States and 8 Union Territories participated in the event.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal handed over the awards earlier this week, an official source said.

NDA-ruled Meghalaya and another BJP-ruled Karnataka have also emerged as top ranking states by “providing strong startup ecosystem for budding entrepreneurs”

Notably, Gujarat was awarded the ‘Best Performer State’ in 2019 and 2020 as well.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said, “The Gujarat government is working with full commitment towards fulfilling the resolve of Atmanirbhar Bharat of the Prime Minister. Startups have the potential to give a new height and dimension to the economy of any country. In future, these startups will play a very important role in making Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

According to the Startup India website, there are 14,200+ (6.70%) registered startups in Gujarat.

A vast network of 180+ incubators/academic institutions from Gujarat are currently supporting startups in the western state.

Gujarat has also bagged the ‘Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2017’ in the successful implementation of the Start-up India programme, officials said.

The 2021 rankings conducted by the centre and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry based on seven broad reform areas.

The reform areas included Institutional Support, Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Access to Market, Incubation support, Funding Support, Mentorship Support and Capacity Building of Enablers, sources said.
