The second wave of deadly floods has devastated many parts of Assam. Over 20 lakh people in 28 districts of Assam have been affected by the flood. A total of 400 revenue villages are under flood water as per the state disaster management authority report.
Darrang, Barpeta, Bajali, and Goalpara in lower Assam and Hojai district in middle Assam are the worst affected areas where almost 13 lakhs people are affected due to the devastating flood. The rising level of many rivers breached at least 25 river embankments in several districts of Assam. Twenty-two people have lost their lives so far in one of the most devastating floods Assam has witnessed in the past several years. Insistent rain in the last few days has raised the water level of most rivers, including the mighty Brahmaputra in the state. Huge water flow from the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Bhutan have further raised the water level of the rivers.
The District administration has set up 373 relief camps and 232 relief distribution centres where 1 lakh 50 thousand flood-affected people have taken shelter. The state government has issued a red alert and asked the district administration to continue the relief and evacuation drive. 43338 hectares of cropland and 31 lakhs of domestic animals are affected in the current wave of floods. Flood water has also destroyed more than 246 roads in the state.
On the other hand, the capital city Guwahati is also under flash floods for the last six days. Water lodging has paralysed the city’s life, as several parts of the city are under flood water. The District administration has provided relief in the affected areas and shifted the people to the relief camps from landslide porn areas.
