Amid large-scale protests by vested interests against the Agnipath recruitment scheme in India, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, on Monday (June 20), announced to recruit agniveers in various sectors of Mahindra Group.

Extending his support to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, Mahindra said on Twitter that the Agnipath scheme will make the youth discipline, skilled and eminently employable. He also said Mahindra Group always welcomes such trained, capable young people into the organisation,

“Saddened by the violence around the #Agneepath program. When the scheme was mooted last year I stated-& I repeat-the discipline & skills Agniveers gain will make them eminently employable. The Mahindra Group welcomes the opportunity to recruit such trained, capable young people,” Mahindra said on Twitter.

When asked by a user about what kind of jobs will be given to Agniveers in the corporate sector, Mahindra said Agniveers have a large potential for employment in the corporate sector. He said agniveers provide market-ready professional solutions to industry, covering the full spectrum from operations to administration & supply chain management.

“Large potential for employment of Agniveers in the Corporate Sector. With leadership, teamwork & physical training, agniveers provide market-ready professional solutions to industry, covering the full spectrum from operations to administration & supply chain management,” said Mahindra.

Mahindra Group has become the first corporate sector to announce jobs in its organisation for the agniveers. It is also to be noted that after the Defence Ministry announced Agnipath Recruitment Scheme, state governments like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka have announced to give Agniveers priority in state government jobs.

While the Ministry of Home Affairs announced a reservation of 10 per cent for Agniveers in CAPF and Assam Rifles, the Defence Ministry announced a 10 per cent of reservation in Indian Coast Guard, Defence Civilian Posts, and all the 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings.

While several opposition leaders and activists jumped into the controversy surrounding the Agnipath scheme, Lt. General Anil Puri, Additional Secretary, Dept of Military Affairs, said the scheme would not be rolled back. He also said those who indulged in arson and violent protests would not be recruited to the Armed Forces.

Speaking to ANI, Lt Gen Anil Puri, Addt’l Secy, Dept of Military Affairs, said, “By going to the streets, they are only wasting their time, they should spend this time to get themselves physically ready. The worst issue is that today we are not what we were 10 years back. Everything is interconnected. Why roger your future? It’s not worth it. I appeal to them to start preparing.”

He said the scheme was designed keeping the youth in mind.

Agnipath scheme is designed to provide an opportunity for the youth who are skilled, disciplined, motivated, keen to don the uniform and are in tune with current technological trends. It will bring a necessary transformational shift of the Armed forces into more tech-savvy.

During the period of four years, Agniveers will be imparted with various military skills, discipline, physical fitness, leadership qualities, patriotism and courage. Post four years, based on the skills they gained during the service, each Agniveer will be recognised with a certificate which becomes a part of their resume.

It is envisaged that after the implementation of the scheme, the average age profile of the Indian Armed Forces would come down by 4-5 years. The new scheme introduced by the government will usher a new era in the Human Resource policy of the armed forces.
