NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has opened the registration link of PhD programmes for the academic year 2026-27. Candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria can apply online through UGC/CSIR NET, JRF or GATE. The last date to apply for JNU PhD admissions 2026 is October 16, 2026, up to 11:50 PM. Applications can be submitted through the official JNU admission website, jnuee.jnu.ac.in. The JNU PhD e-Prospectus 2026-27 is also available online. It contains details about programme-wise eligibility, relevant NET subjects, available seats and other admission requirements.

PhD admissions are being offered across several JNU Schools and Centres, including International Studies, Social Sciences, Languages, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Computer and Systems Sciences, Physical Sciences, Biotechnology, Engineering, Management and Entrepreneurship, among others. Candidates can choose up to three fields of study in order of preference while filling out the application form. The preference order submitted by a candidate will be treated as final. If a candidate is selected for a higher preference, they will not be considered for a lower preference.

Important Dates of JNU Ph.D Admission

JNU PhD Admission 2026 Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility requirements vary depending on the PhD programme. In general, candidates with a one-year/two-semester master’s degree after a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a two-year master’s degree after a three-year bachelor’s degree, need at least 55 per cent marks or an equivalent grade.

Candidates seeking admission after a four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s degree need at least 75 per cent marks, subject to the applicable rules. Candidates from eligible reserved categories will receive relaxation as prescribed. However, meeting the educational qualification alone does not make a candidate eligible for admission. Candidates must also fulfil the prescribed NET, JRF or GATE requirement for the programme they are applying for.

The relevant NET/JRF subject and other requirements may differ across PhD programmes. Candidates should therefore check the programme-wise eligibility criteria given in the JNU PhD e-Prospectus 2026-27 before applying.

Is There a JNU PhD Admission 2026 Entrance Exam?

There is no separate JNU entrance examination for admissions through NET/JRF/GATE under this process. For candidates applying through UGC/CSIR NET, the NET percentile carries 70 per cent weightage and viva-voce carries 30 per cent weightage in preparing the merit list. JNU will use NET percentiles from June 2025 onwards for the 2026-27 admission cycle.

Out of all candidates who apply through the JRF category, all eligible applicants will be called for viva-voce. The final selection will be based entirely on viva-voce performance, which carries 100 per cent weightage. Candidates applying under JRF must submit a separate application under this category.

The GATE route is available only for PhD programmes under the School of Engineering. For eligible GATE candidates, the GATE score will carry 70 per cent weightage and the viva-voce will carry 30 per cent. The GATE route covers PhD programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering under the School of Engineering.

Candidates who will apply under the JRF category have a different selection process from those applying through NET or GATE. Eligible JRF candidates will be called for the viva-voce stage. For NET and GATE candidates, simply qualifying the examination does not guarantee a call for the viva-voce. They will be shortlisted on the basis of their NET percentile or valid GATE score and the number of seats available in the respective programme.

How to Apply for JNU PhD Admission 2026

Candidates can follow these steps to complete the application process:

  • Visit the official JNU admission portal
  • Select the Ph.D. admission option for the academic year 2026-27
  • Choose the applicable category: NET, JRF or GATE
  • Register and enter the required personal and academic details
  • Upload the photograph and signature in the prescribed format
  • Review the information entered in the application form
  • Pay the application fee through the available online payment mode
  • Submit the JNU PhD application form 2026 and download a copy for future reference

JNU PhD Selection Criteria

Qualifying NET or GATE does not automatically guarantee a candidate a place in the viva-voce round. JNU will shortlist candidates based on their NET percentile or valid GATE score and the number of seats available in the respective programme.

For the general category, candidates may be shortlisted up to eight times the number of available seats. For SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates, the shortlisting limit may go up to 10 times the available intake. The limit is also up to 10 times the intake for PwD candidates wherever seats are available.

Since the application window closes on October 16, candidates are advised to complete the process well before the deadline to avoid last minute delays.
