AAP leader Nisha Singh was earlier an advisor to Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. A court in Gurugram sentenced her to seven years in jail for instigating a riot in 2015.

A court in Gurugram sentenced Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Nisha Singh to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for instigating a riot in 2015. Sixteen more people were pronounced guilty for the same crime.

Pronouncing the verdict, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Mona Singh said, “There is no doubt that this is a serious lapse on the part of the accused to injure public officers, but there is no reason to believe that they cannot be reformed or rehabilitated and that they are likely to continue the criminal acts of violence as would constitute a continuing threat to society.”

According to the police records submitted in the court, a team of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) was removing encroachment at Jhimar Basti in Gurugram on May 15, 2015.

The investigation had found that the then councillor of the Municipal Corporation, Nisha Singh, had instigated the crowd to attack the officers carrying out the official duties. It was also found that the mob threw petrol bombs and LPG cylinders at the police teams after instigation by the AAP leaders, resulting in injury of a duty magistrate and 15 other policemen.

Nisha Singh was also fined 10000 rupees by the court.

After the news of her conviction spread, AAP quickly deleted her profile page from its website. The profile read “Nisha Singh is a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and Advisor to the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia…Currently a member of the party’s Fundraising team, she has also been a spokesperson of AAP in the past.”

Till 2009 she was a senior executive with Google India.

This is not new for AAP. Its leaders have been booked by the police for causing riots in Delhi.

In the Jahangirpuri riots, AAP leader Mohammed Ansar was booked by the Delhi Police under NSA for pelting stones on a Hanuman Jayanti procession and causing riots.

Another leader of AAP, Tahir Hussain, is in jail for his involvement in Delhi riots of February 2020.
