NEW DELHI: The Delhi BJP has intensified its attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), staging a protest outside the party office and demanding the expulsion of its Trilokpuri MCD councillor Vijay Kumar over allegations linked to the death by suicide of a sanitation worker.
Led by Lok Sabha MP Yogender Chandoliya and Delhi BJP vice-president Sunil Yadav, BJP workers demanded an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Deepak, an MCD sanitation worker.
The BJP has alleged that Deepak was subjected to financial harassment and faced financial difficulties allegedly connected to the councillor, and that these circumstances contributed to his suicide. These are allegations by the BJP and have not been established as facts in the information provided.
BJP demands action against AAP Councillor
The protesters demanded that AAP leadership remove Vijay Kumar from the party and take action against anyone found responsible.
Deepak’s wife and minor daughter also accompanied the BJP leaders during the demonstration, adding a personal dimension to the BJP’s demand for accountability and justice for the family.
Chandoliya questioned the silence of senior AAP leaders, asking why Arvind Kejriwal, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Kuldeep Kumar had not publicly responded to the allegations against the councillor.
“Why are Arvind Kejriwal, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Kuldeep Kumar silent despite serious allegations against AAP Councillor Vijay Kumar of financially harassing an MCD sanitation worker and allegedly driving him to suicide?” Chandoliya said.
Four BJP leaders detained
The protest also led to police action. Chandoliya, MLAs Ravi Kant Ujjainwal and Ravinder Negi, and councillor Priyanka Gautam were detained at Tilak Marg police station and later released.
According to the BJP, workers from the Mayur Vihar district joined the demonstration along with thousands of party office-bearers and supporters. The BJP said it would continue pressing for an impartial probe, accountability and relief for Deepak’s family.
Sanitation workers cannot be exploited
Chandoliya said allegations of injustice, exploitation or financial harassment involving sanitation workers would not be tolerated. The BJP has sought action against those responsible if the allegations are substantiated and has made the case a wider political issue, arguing that sanitation workers deserve protection, dignity and institutional support.
