Guwahati: BJP registered a massive win in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election. BJP and alliance partner AGP won 58 out of 60 wards in the GMC election, out of which the ruling BJP alone won 52 wards and AGP registered victory in six wards.
Interestingly, the main opposition Congress party couldn’t win a single ward in the GMC election. For the first time since the inception of GMC, there will not be a Congress representative. On the other hand, AAP and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) won two wards dominated by the Muslim population.
Reacting to the landslide victory of the BJP, CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the people of Assam have decided to expunge the Congress party from the state politics and the result shows that. Political adviser to Assam CM and MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah said that Congress is now a party of migrant Muslims and the Assamese people will never bring them back to the state politics. BJP MP Pabitra Margherita claims that AAP and AJP won two wards dominated by Muslim voters. He said the traditional Congress voters this time chose to vote for AAP and AJP.
Election for 57 wards of GMC was held on 22 April. BJP won in three wards uncontested. Interestingly, 29 out of 30 BJP-AGP women candidates won in the GMC election.
