Manipur: NPP, Congress announce candidates, BJP to announce soon

Imphal: National People’s Party (NPP) Manipur has announced its candidates for the ensuing 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections 2022 on Monday evening.

Yumnam Joykumar Singh, Chairman of Election Management Committee of NPP, Manipur declared the names of candidates for 20 assembly seats as approved by its president and chairman of the central election committee of the party, Conard K Sangma.

Three MLAs, YumnamJoykumar Singh, N Kayisii and LangpoklakpamJayantakumar Singh are in the list of NPP candidates. The party won four seats in the last assembly election has only three MLAs after LetpaoHaokip, MLA of Chandel joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

NPP is an ally in the Chief Minister, Biren-led BJP government in Manipur. However, in the 2022 assembly elections, both the BJP and NPP will fight separately.

Earlier the main opposition party, Indian National Congress (INC) on Saturday released a list of 40 candidates. The lists include former Chief Minister, OkramIbobi Singh (MLA) his son SurjakumarOkram (MLA), PCC President, N Loken Singh (MLA), former Speaker, ThLokeshwar Singh (MLA), Congress Working Committee member and former Deputy Chief Minister, Gaikhangam (MLA), AK Mirabai (MLA), K Meghachandra Singh (MLA) and TN Haokip (MLA).

According to sources, the ruling BJP is likely to announce its candidates on or before 25 January 2022. Leaders of the party including state president, AdhikarimayumSarda Devi and Chief Minister, N Biren Singh have rushed to New Delhi on Saturday to finalise candidates for the Manipur Assembly elections 2022 scheduled to be held in two phases on February 27 and March 3. BJP is likely to file candidates in all the 60 assembly seats.
