New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday (August 23) evening, spoke to German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel, and both the leaders discussed the unfolding security situation in Afghanistan and its implications on the region and the rest of the world.
"They emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and security, with the most urgent priority being the repatriation of stranded people," an MEA release said here.
The two leaders also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda, including cooperation in Covid-19 vaccines, development cooperation focusing on climate and energy, and fostering trade and economic relations.
Mr Modi and Ms Merkel exchanged views on issues of multilateral interest, such as the forthcoming COP-26 meeting and the Indian initiative to promote a dialogue on maritime security at the United Nations Security Council.

The interactions between PM Modi and the German leader have their own significance in the given circumstances, as German troops are among the forces securing the Kabul airport, and some were also involved in the gun battle on Monday, August 23.
India has evacuated about 550 people, including 400 Indians. Indian Air Force planes have evacuated some Indian origin, Afghan politicians, and a few Nepali citizens.
Mr Modi also tweeted to share information about his tele talks with Ms Merkel and said both sides reiterated the commitment to strengthen the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.
