Guwahati: when Assam police is fighting hard to uproot the drug network, it has come to light that the drug peddlers have penetrated deep into the state. Muslim drug peddlers are doing home delivery of contraband in Nagaon town of middle Assam.
Nagaon police busted such a racket involved in-home delivery of drugs and arrested two peddlers, Faruq Hussain and Rafiqul Islam. Both the arrested peddlers were out for home delivery of drugs and banned cough syrups in a motorcycle.
Nagaon SP Anand Mishra told the organiser, "After constant and aggressive operations, the drug paddlers have changed their distribution system. They now carry a little amount with them and if caught says they are drug users only. Some of the peddlers are doing home delivery to the consumers. Nagaon police, in the last three months, arrested 250 peddlers and kingpins and recovered contrabands worth rupees more than 50 crores."
Rider squad of the Nagaon police on Saturday evening, on specific information, arrested the two peddlers from the Diphlu area of the town and recovered drugs, 30 bottles of banned cough syrups, mobile phones and a knife. Sources said that because of the tight vigilance by police against drug rackets, the drug peddlers have changed their modus operandi. They now go to the drug users and supply the contraband at home.
Nagaon is considered one of the main distribution points of drugs for its proximity to the state border. Drugs coming via Nagaland-Manipur are being distributed from Nagaon. But after the aggressive operations by police, drug rackets are now finding ways to en route the existing drug consignment, police sources said.
