Following Pakistani spy agency ISI’s foiled attack in India, Punjab province has been put on high alert. According to media reports, an improvised explosive device (IED) laden tiffin box was tracked in Amritsar in Punjab by the security forces. The tiffin box was delivered by the drone sent by Pakistani ISI, and later Dinkar Gupta of Punjab Police told reporters, “Some recoveries were made yesterday in Amritsar (rural) which include 5 grenades, Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-fitted tiffin boxes and 100 rounds of 9 mm pistol. As per our assessment, these bombs were delivered via a drone from across the border”.
According to the preliminary report of the National Security Guard (NSG), the IED consists of 2-3 kgs of RDX. “The state will remain on high alert. We have also increased the checking,” Gupta said.
Meanwhile, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, Gulam Rasool Dar, Kulgam BJP Kisan Morcha president, and his wife Jawhara Banoo were shot dead by militants in the Anantnag district. The terrorists fired bullets at the couple at Lal Chowk in Anantnag.
Pakistani Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) has been involved in running subversive activities in India, with one of the subsections of its Joint Intelligence Bureau (JIB) department dedicated to perform various terrorist and subversive operations inside India. The Joint Signal Intelligence Bureau (JSIB), another department under Pakistani ISI, has also been involved in providing communication and logistic supports to Pakistani agents operating in India and a number of South Asian countries, including Bangladesh and Nepal. The Joint Intelligence North section of the Joint Counter-Intelligence Bureau (JCIB) wing of ISI deals, particularly with Indian affairs. Back in the 1950s, the ISI’s Covert Action Division (CAD) had supplied arms to insurgents in the Northeast Indian states.
The ISI was created in 1947. When General Zia-ul-Haq seized power in July 1977, he started his K2 (Kashmir and Khalistan) strategy, initiating Operation Tupac. He gave ISI the duty to make Jammu and Kashmir a part of Pakistan and to send terrorists to Punjab province in India. ISI’s aims are to confound Indian Muslims using Kashmiri Muslims, extend its network in India, cultivate terrorists and terrorist groups, causing attacks similar to the 1993 Bombay bombings in other cities, and create a state of insurgency in Muslim-dominated regions.
Pakistani ISI spent over 24 million Indian rupees every month in order to fund its activities in Jammu and Kashmir in India. The creation of six militancy groups in Kashmir, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was funded and patronized by ISI. According to the US intelligence source, Pakistani ISI is continuing to provide protection, funding and patronization to LeT, alongside many other terrorist groups and individuals. The Pakistan Army and ISI also LeT volunteers surreptitiously penetrate from Pakistan Administrated Kashmir to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Mumbai massacres
The 1993 Mumbai bombings were a series of 13 bomb explosions that took place in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India, on Friday, 12 March 1993. The coordinated attacks were the most destructive bomb explosions in Indian history. The single-day attacks resulted in over 250 fatalities and 1,200 injuries.
The attacks were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim, notorious don of the Mumbai-based international organized crime syndicate named D-Company, which has its operational bases in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), Dominica, Lebanon and Pakistan.
Dawood Ibrahim, under the instructions from Pakistani ISI, ordered and helped organize the Mumbai massacres through one of his gang members named Tiger Memon. In addition to ISI, the bombings in Mumbai were financially assisted by the expatriate Indian smugglers, Hajji Ahmed, Hajji Umar and Taufiq Jaliawala, as well as the Pakistani smugglers Aslam Bhatti and Dawood Jatt.
Zabiuddin Ansari, a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant, accused of his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, said that ISI and Pakistani army officials were involved in planning the attacks and had attended the meetings.
An Indian report summarizing intelligence gained from India’s interrogation of David Headley said that Pakistani ISI had provided support for the attacks by providing funding for reconnaissance missions in Mumbai. The report included Headley’s statement that Lashkar-e-Taiba’s chief military commander, Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi, had close ties to the ISI. He also said that “every big action of LeT is done in close coordination with the ISI”.
In 2012 Pakistani civilian security agencies told Pakistan courts that “suspects in the Mumbai attacks case got training at various centers of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant organization, including navigational training in Karachi” and “suspects, who allegedly participated in the attacks, were trained at the LeT training centers at Yousaf Goth in Karachi, Buttle in Mansehra, Mirpur Sakro in Thatta and Muzaffarabad”.
Pakistani ISI’s propaganda
For years, Pakistani spy agency ISI has been spending hugely on propaganda against India. But such propaganda offensives have been increased several folds ever since Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. According to sources, ISI has not only been spreading false propaganda against BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi through various news outlets in the Western nations and the South Asian region, but it has also succeeded in penetrating into several media outlets in India as well.
In addition to continuing propaganda against India, BJP and Narendra Modi government through the print and electronic media, Pakistani ISI has also been focusing on social media platforms as well as video-sharing sites such as YouTube.
For years, Pakistani ISI has been attempting to sabotage India’s economy by circulating counterfeit Indian currency amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Major distribution bases of such counterfeit currencies are located in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Punjab province in India, as well as India’s neighbouring Nepal.
It is also reported in the media that Pakistani ISI is directly involved in transnational drug trafficking activities by forming an alliance with the Afghan Taliban as well as other terrorist groups such as Lebanese Hezbollah, Palestinian Hamas, and Myanmar’s Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).
