India’s Permanent Representative to United Nations, TS Tirumurti, has stated that India’s priority in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is on issues that are directly relevant to the international community, such as maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. Ambassador Tirumurti was briefing reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York yesterday about the Council’s major areas of focus in August under India’s Presidency of UNSC.
On the agenda of counter-terrorism, India’s top envoy to the UN said, India has consistently kept the spotlight on combating terrorism, both inside the discussions in the council and outside as well. Mr Tirumurti said conflicts have increased during the Pandemic, putting considerable pressure on UN Peacekeepers and resources. In this scenario, India’s priority in the UN, particularly in UNSC, has a very clear focus on issues that are directly relevant to the international community. These issues are international terrorism, peacekeeping, enhancing international peace and security, sensitivity to developing country issues, especially Africa and small states, reformed multilateralism, and furthering the agenda of women and human-centric development. Mr Tirumurti emphasized the importance of the continued support of bilateral, regional and multilateral partners of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) to further consolidate peace and stability in Darfur.
The Indian Ambassador to the UN said, Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India, and if there needs to be a change in status, it is the vacation of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
India has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August.
