Guwahati: On the occasion of anti-terrorism day, rich tributes were paid to Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary, who was assassinated on 30 July 1996 at Goibari of Basugaon locality in Chirang district of western Assam. The ABSU president sacrificed his life for the sake of peace and his family members are still working for peace in Bodo territories.

“On this day, let us all resolve to nip terrorism in the bud. Let us all work together to strengthen our society based on the tenets of friendship and universal brotherhood and wipe out drugs and human trafficking which are also the manifestations of terrorism,” said State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for leading the way in signing the Bodo peace accord which laid the foundation of tangible peace in the Bodo areas. With regard to the gesture made by NDFB leaders in responding to the peace process, Sarma informed that the government earmarked rupees 160 crore for the rehabilitation of surrendered rebels.

Sarma also interacted with 40 children, who were recently rescued from the clutches of human traffickers in Sikkim by a team of Chirang police personnel. Listening to their harrowing experiences, he declared that such heinous crimes would not be allowed to continue in the State.

In presence of BTR chief Pramod Boro, legislator Lawrence Islary along with senior administrative and police officers, Sarma also interacted with leading academicians, scholars, authors, other eminent citizens in Kokrajhar where various issues regarding the development of BTR were discussed in the meeting.
