The Union government Monday announced the criteria for the next round of vaccination. Everyone above 18 is eligible for vaccination and the state governments have given the autonomy to procure vaccines for its population.
Within hours of the announcement, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Assam government moved quickly to procure vaccines for its people.
Both the states have also announced free vaccines for all.
The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh said the government was determined to vaccinate all people of Uttar Pradesh. It added the decision was taken to ensure poor people were not left behind.
The BJP leader and Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the press the Assam government had initiated the process to procure one crore doses of Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech.
The next round of vaccination will start from May 1.
