PM Modi slams ‘topi, darhi, lungi sarkar’ comment by AIUDF leader Abdur Rahim Ajmal

Guwahati: As the people with self-pride erupted with anger against the comment of Abdur Rahim Ajmal, an All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leader, who claimed in a poll rally that this time Assam would have a government of topi, darhi, lungi (read a regime of people with typical Arabian Muslim attires), Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed him commenting that it is a huge insult for the people of Assam. The son of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal made the claim yesterday in a public meeting seeking votes for their candidates in the third phase of State legislative assembly elections at Bhabanipur of western Assam, which is incidentally the birthplace of Khargeswar Talukdar, the martyr of historic Assam movement (to deport all illegal migrants from Assam), who died facing atrocities of security forces on 10 December 1979.

Addressing a massive poll rally at Tamulpur on Saturday, PM Modi commented that the Congress-led grand alliance’s major partner AIUDF has categorically proven the Bhartiya Janata Party’s claim if voted to power they would form a government of men (read Bangladeshi Muslim migrants) with topi (skull cap), darhi (beard) and lungi (distinctive lower garment). Modi however declared that the Assam electorates have already decided ‘Phir ek baar, NDA sarkar’ (once again the NDA government in Dispur). Those who insulted Assam’s identity and propagate violence will get proper response from the voters. Those evil elements maintained instability in Assam for decades, but the commoners remain with the peace and development, asserting Modi adding that Mohajhooth of Mohajoat (grand alliance) has already been exposed to the voters.

“We work for everyone without discrimination and the double-engine government of NDA has given double benefits to the people of Assam in the last five years. The development taking place is improving
connectivity, making lives easier for women and increasing opportunities for the youth,” claimed Modi. Criticizing the opposition Congress party, Modi commented that during their tenure, Assam witnessed a long period of violence, bomb and guns. He also slammed the games of ‘secularism-communism’ that damages the country to many extents. It is country’s misfortune that working for a particular section is called secularism while working for everyone gets you called communal, he remarked.

The NDA government has been moving forward on the path of peace and prosperity with every partner of Assam, stated Modi urging the youth (particularly first time voters) to vote in large numbers. He pointed out that their mandates would determine how far ahead Assam would be when India celebrates 100 years of independence. Meanwhile, State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP chief Ranjeet Kr Dass with others organised poll rallies in various locations. Influential saffron leader Sarma was initially bared from campaigning (also media interactions) for 48 hours since yesterday by the election authority over the violation of the model code of conduct.

He earned flacks from the authority commenting in a media interaction that Bodoland People’s Front chief Hagrama Mohilary would be jailed if found indulging in militancy once again in Bodoland Territorial Region. However, the authority relaxed the period to 24 hours and hence Sarma resumed poll campaigns this evening in various localities.
