Bharat is a very inclusive and tolerant country, said Inter-Parliamentary Union President Duarte Pacheco Tuesday.

He said, “India is the largest democracy in the world and in all levels, from local to national, is looking to be more inclusive with more women and young people. India respects convictions, political and religious, of each person.”
Pacheo, a Member of Parliament in Portugal since 1991, has been elected the president of Switzerland based Inter-Parliamentary Union recently.

He expressed Portugal’s support for Bharat’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

The IPU has 179 parliaments as its members which represent 6.5 billion people in the world. It was founded in 1889.
Pacheo is on a seven-day visit to Bharat on the invitation of the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

He also praised the economy of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, terming it ‘amazing’.
