In a big judicial victory for the Narendra Modi government, the UK court ordered the extradition of Nirav Modi to Bharat to stand trial for economic offences.
Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choski had fled Bharat in the first week of January 2018. They had made fraudulent transactions worth 13000 crore rupees through the Punjab National Bank.
Nirav is a diamond businessman from Gujarat. The scam became public in February 2018.
The court found strong evidence to believe Nirav conspired to destroy evidence against him and intimidate the witnesses.
Dismissing his plea of mental health concerns, the court noted it’s common in such circumstances and ordered the authorities at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai to make adequate arrangements for his medical care.
Mehul Choski had taken the Antiguan Citizenship in November 2017. The Antiguan prime minister had promised to extradite Choski once he had exhausted his legal remedies.
In Nirav’s case, he still can appeal in higher courts which is very likely.
