An FIR has been launched against senior Trinamool Congress leader and MP Kalyaan Banerjee over his controversial comment on Goddess Sita. A complaint was filed on the same by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) member Ashish Jaiswal. While addressing a rally in West Bengal on Saturday, the TMC MP claimed that Sita told Lord Ram it was luck that she was abducted by Ravana and not by his “chelas” or else her fate would have been the same as the Hathras victim. The video soon went viral on social media.
“Words used by Kalyan Banerjee about ‘Sita Maa’ have hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Thus, I went and complained. Bengalis are hurt by what Kalyan Banerjee said. He also hurt the members of the BJP. I want him to apologise,” Ashish Jaiswal said. An FIR was registered against the TMC MP in Golabari police station of Howrah district on Sunday.
Howrah District Maithili Samaj also demanded an apology, saying its members will stage a protest if the MP fails to apologise. “We thoroughly condemn Kalyan Banerjee. The way he talked about Ma Sita is disrespectful to women. This is condemnable. If he does not apologise within 24 hours, we will stage a protest. We ask Kalyan Banerjee to stop disrespecting Sita and Ram. We want him to retract his comments.”
Reacting to Banerjee’s statement, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra had earlier said that it denigrates Hindus. “Can he dare to say these words for any other religion?” he asked. “As far state the statement made by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee regarding Sita-Maa is concerned, it is absolutely a derogatory statement. He has offended the sentiment of crores of Hindus across the length and breadth of this country. I see this as a typical appeasement policy of Mamata Banerjee,” Patra added.
