Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls for a peaceful transfer of power in the U.S as massive violence hits Washington

Condemning the violent protests which happened at the U.S capitol carried out by the Trump supporters, PM Modi said that the democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests and called for a smooth transfer of power. He tweeted, “Distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington D.C. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests.” The supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump had swarmed into the Capitol building to protest the Electoral College vote.

Trumps supporters marched to the U.S capitol reiterating that the election mandate was stolen and demanded ‘their voices to be heard’. The protestors overpowered the security forces and entered the House and Senate chambers. Several congressional buildings had to be evacuated due to these violent protests. Washington D.C.’s police chief had informed the press that four people died and 52 were arrested in the police crackdown. The mayor of Washington D.C, Muriel Bowser tweeted, “I have issued Mayor’s Order 2021-003, extending the public emergency declared earlier today for a total of 15 days, until and unless provided for by further Mayoral Order.” U.S President-elect Joe Biden called the violence an ‘insurrection’.

Biden called for the restoration of “simple decency” and said, “The words of a president matter, no matter how good or bad that president is. At their best, the words of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite,” he added. He called on Trump to “go on national television now, to fulfil his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege.”

Former US President Barack Obama said Trump incited the violence. “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonour and shame for our nation,” he said.
