All the four accused in Disha rape and murder case were killed in an encounter that took place at Chatanpally in Shadnagar near Hyderabad in the wee hours, between 3 and 6am. Cyberabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar confirmed the encounter and death of the four accused. The encounter took place in the area where the body of the victim was spotted.
According to initial reports, the police were trying to reconstruct the crime scene in the morning. Police opened fire, when the accused Mohammad Areef and his three friends tried to escape.
According to the police, they opened fire at the fleeing accused after due warnings. All four died on the spot.
Reacting to the incident, the victim’s sister said they welcomed it. “We are happy. We did not expect this (killing in the encounter). We thought they would be hanged through courts.”
“We thank everyone who stood by us. With this incident people should be scared to indulge in such crimes (against women),” she told reporters.
Speaking to a news agency, Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother said, “I am extremely happy with this punishment. Police has done a great job and I demand that no action should be taken against the police personnel.”
Meanwhile, the people in and outside Hyderabad took to the street and celebrated the ‘speedy punishment’ meted out to the rapists! Social media hailed Police Commissioner Sajjanar and his team as heroes and shower them with praises. In a similar incident, when two engineering students of Warangal were attacked with acid in December 2008, Sajjanar and his team had gunned down three suspects in an encounter. He was the superintendent of police of Warangal district at that time.
