Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India on Monday. President Ram Nath Kovind administered him the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Bobde succeeds Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who retired on Sunday. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP Veteran L K Advani etc. were present on the occasion.
Justice Bobde has a tenure of around 18 months as the CJI till his retirement on April 23, 2021.
Born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, he earned a law degree from Nagpur University and was enrolled on the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978. He was designated as a senior advocate in 1998.
Chief Justice SA Bobde’s career as judge began in March 2000, when he was appointed as an Additional Judge in the Bombay High Court. He became the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in October 2012, and was elevated to the Supreme Court on April 12, 2013. He was a member of the five-judge constitution bench which delivered the historic Ayodhya verdict.
