New Delhi: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) urged the Central Government to immediately fill 2000 odd vacant PG seats in medical on the basis of merit. A high level delegation of ABVP leaders called on the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan in this regard on June 8.
It is to be noted that only the students achieving 50 percentile in NEET are granted admissions in PG courses. But the students who have achieved lower percentile have also been granted admission in PG courses in the past. In previous years also, the students getting 34 percentile were granted admission. Therefore, the ABVP demanded that the students passing MBBS and working in any hospital for one year should be exempted from 50 percentile compulsion, because the NEET results show that this condition is not being fulfilled. “Hence, the ABVP demands that instead of 50 percentile in NEET, the admissions in medical PG courses should be allowed on the basis of merit and all the vacant seats should be filled as soon as possible,” the ABVP said in a statement.
ABVP pointed out that all the vacant seats are returned to the Universities after a time limit that allows the private universities to offer admissions to the students under management quota after collecting heavy donation. The ABVP is against this kind of commercilisation of education.
ABVP national general secretary Shri Ashish Chauhan said keeping in view the huge shortage of doctors in the country the vacant seats in medical colleges is a matter of grave concern. Those seats should be filled immediately. He said if the students are not able to achieve expected marks in NEET, it puts a serious question mark over the medical education in the country. “The ABVP demands the central government to fill the seats in PG courses of Medical on the basis of merit and not only on the basis of NEET percentile,” the ABVP statement added.
