Jammu: Suspected terrorists opened fire at a police check-post along Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Jhajjar Kotli, about 30 km from Jammu, on Wednesday morning. They managed to escape from the spot after firing at the police deployed at the check-post.
The Jammu-Srinagar highway was put on high alert after the firing
At least three terrorists were reported to have escaped in the nearby forest area and a massive cordon and search operation has been launched in the area. Personnel from Jammu & Kashmir police, CRPF and the Army are engaged in chasing the terrorists, according to reports trickling in around 11 am.
One CRPF jawan has been reported as injured in this incident. The state police issued a press release saying an incident of shooting was reported at Jhajjar Kotli. According to initial reports, the terrorists were travelling in a truck, and the truck driver tried to speed past the check-post when he was signalled to stop. Three terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles and some ammunition got down from the truck ahead of the Naka and ran away into the forests nearby.
The truck driver and conductor have been taken into custody and were being interrogated. Some ammunition has been seized from the spot.
The spot where this happened is close to a point where the highway bifurcates with one road leading to Katra, the base camp of the cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. Security apparatus near the shrine area was alerted about the incident, and some of CRPF men available in the area are now involved in search operations.
