Beyond Gandhi and Nehru?

Intro:It is unfortunate that many of these patriots who sacrificed every thing for their motherland were either hanged at young age or died of torture during prison life.Had they lived their full life the destiny of Hindusthan would have been different.

Children, whenever the topic of Freedom Struggle is raised only few names are projected before us. It is shown as if only because of these people our Bharat got freedom from the yoke of British Imperialism. However the credit for India”s independence goes to millions of people who came out to fight British rule and did not bother to give the supreme sacrifice to break the chains of bondage. They made a major contribution but are today relegated to the dust of history.
Below are few of them who contributed to get the freedom which we enjoy today.

Avadh Bihari was born in 1889 at Delhi. He was a nationalist and a freedom fighter. He was involved in revolutionary activities against British rule and fought against them from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. He was associated with Ras Bihari Bose and planned to throw bomb on Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy of India. They targeted Lord Hardinge, on the occasion of transferring the capital of British India from Calcutta to New Delhi. The conspiracy culminated on the attempted assassination on December 23, 1912 when a homemade bomb was thrown into the Viceroys”s howdah when the ceremonial procession moved through the Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Although wounded in the attempt, the Viceroy escaped with his injuries, along with Lady Hardinge, but his mahavat was killed in the attack. The investigations in the aftermath of the assassination attempt led to the Delhi Conspiracy trial. He was sentenced to death and hanged at Ambala Central Jail on May 11, 1915.

Ram Prasad Bismil was born on June11, 1897 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was a brave revolutionary who gave up his life smilingly for the sake of the Motherland. Ram Prasad Bismil first participated in the Mainpuri Conspiracy in the year 1918. He later, joined the Hindustan Republican Association, where he met Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and others.
These people inspired him to become a revolutionary and fight for the freedom of his motherland. His name is primarily connected with the Kakori Train Robbery (August 9,1925). With his friend, another great revolutionary of India, Ashfaquallah Khan, Bismil carried out revolutionary activities in Shahjahanpur. On September 26, Ram Prasad Bismil was arrested and taken into custody by the British government, after a month long search and was produced in court. On December19,1927 Bismil was found guilty of the incident and was given death sentence together with Ashfaqullah Khan and two others and the rest were sentenced to life imprisonment. Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai, Dekhna hai zor kitna baaju-e-qaatil me hai, wrote Bismil, and thus ended the brave life of an Indian revolutionary.

Sardar Udham Singh was born on December 26,1899 in Shahpur Kalan Village in Sangrur district of Punjab.
After 1907, he lived his childhood in Central Khalsa orphanage Putlighar in Amritsar because of the untimely death of his mother and father.
He reached Africa in 1920, moving to Nairobi in 1921. Singh tried for a passage to the United States but was unsuccessful.
He returned to India in 1924, reaching the US that same year. There, Singh became actively involved with members of the Gadar Party, an Indian group known for its revolutionary politics and its founder, Sohan Singh Bhakna. Singh spent three years in revolutionary activities in the US and organised Overseas Indians for the freedom struggle.
He returned to India in July 1927 on orders from Bhagat Singh. He was accompanied by 25 associates from the US and brought a consignment of revolvers and ammunition. He came into the limelight for the assassination of General Michael O’Dwyer—the man responsible for Jallianwala Bagh massacre. On July 31, 1940 he was hanged at Pentonville Prison for the assassination of Michael O”Dwyer.

Madan lal Dhingra was born on September 18, 1883 in Amritsar in a doctor”s family. Freedom of the motherland was not particularly on Madan Lal’s mind during early days of his life. He took a move towards nation”s freedom after he went to London for studying engineering in June 1906.
He joined India House in London, where he met Veer Savarkar.It was Veer Savarkar who inspired Dhingra to take steps to bring independence to India.
Madan Lal Dhingra came into limelight when he assassinated Curzon Wyllie on July 1, 1909. Curzon Wyllie was perceived to have been responsible for several brutal measures against the Indian people.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar born in village Bhagru in Nashik district of Maharashtra on May 28, 1883. After graduating from Fergussion College, Pune, he joined Law College at Bombay. During this period, he came in contact with Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak formed ‘Abhinav Bharat’, a youth organisation which produced many revolutionaries. Veer Savarkar contributed a lot to India’s Independence. At India House in London Veer Savarkar used to gather many Indian students, and give speeches and hold discussions to inspire them to serve the cause of the upliftment of India. He was arrested and was sentenced to transportation to Andaman Jail for life. Due to growing protests and demand for his release he was released in 1922. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose met Savarkar and got his blessings to organise the Indian National army to wrest freedom from the British hands.Savarkar appealed to the youth to join armed forces and get training to fight the British in the language they understood. His slogan ‘Hinduise Indian Politics and Militarise Hindudom’ summed up his approach for rebuilding Hindusthan.

Bhai Parmanand was the torch-bearer of revolutionary freedom movement, a friend , philosopher and guide of revolutionaries of Punjab including Kartar Singh Soraba and Sardar Bhagat Singh.Born on November 4,1874 at Kariala Village of Jehlam District of Punjab, he was disgusted with the Gandhian politics and Khilafat fiasco and subsequent jihad against Hindus in Malabar and elsewhere ,Bhai Parmanand decided to activise ‘Hindu Mahasabha’.A man of iron and courage of conviction Bhai Parmanand kept the flame of nationalism and Hundutva burning at a time when Congress was advocating composite nationalism which blew up like a bubble when it accepted the Partition on the Motherland. He could not stand the shock and died in December 1947 at Jalandhar.
Besides these patriots, Ramesh Chandra Dutt, Master Amir Chand, Rash Behari Bose, Dr Mathura Singh, Ashfaq Ullah Khan, Bhai Balmukand, Sachinder Sanyal, Jitendra Nath Dass, Sufi Amba Prasad, Hemu Kalani, Jitinder Nath Mookerji, C N Mathunga Mudaliar, Sardar Ajit Singh, Vishnu Ganesh Pingle, Madam Bhikaji Rustam Cama, Genda Lal Dikshit, Anant Kanahre, Besant Kumar Biswas, Baba Prithvi Singh Azad sacrificed their life for the sake of Bharatmata.
