Muslim League minister refuses to light lamp

By S Chandrasekhar

Among the Muslim League Ministers Dr MK Muneer is considered a gentleman. A medical doctor, cartoonist, a good singer, he is respected by all. In the recent ‘Wikileaks’ exposure, he had opposed Muslim League leader Kunhalikutty’s link with jehadi elements.

But the radicalisation of the Kerala Muslims has affected him too. At a recent meeting in Kozhicode to commemorate the ‘revati  Pattathanam’ (centuries old vedic scholarly debate), he moved away without lighting the lamp.

Despite the old and frail Zamorin King of Malabar and the District Collector PB. Salim, lighted the lamp and the organisers requesting him, he slyly moved away to his seat.
Maybe he didn’t want to meet the fate of former Muslim League Minister Cherkalam Abdulla of Kasargod district, who almost a decade back, faced community ire for applying ‘Tilak’ and lighting lamp, during a function.

But the Muslim Leaguers forget that the oldest mosque, ‘Cheraman Mosque’, near Kodungallur in Thrissur, has an oil lamp burning 24 hours x 7days.
