THIS is a short novel in which Ram Mukherjee tells his son Som, a romantic idealist, who has just completed his graduation, to go to Delhi to appear for the CAT examination and join a management institute. But Som wants to stay on in Kolkata as he is unable to visualise life without his family or girl friend Chandni. When he goes to meet Chandni to inform her about his father’s desire, Chandni tells him about her imminent marriage to an engineer working in the United States. Spurned in love, Som learns the first shocking lesson of his life.
Crestfallen, he informs his parents that he has changed his mind and is willing to leave for Delhi. He boards the Rajdhani Express and reaches Delhi. Here he completes his course and takes up a job as a public relations professional. He becomes friendly with Tanya and one day when they are in Jaipur on official duty, Som and Tanya run into Chandni at a restaurant. Chandni tells him that she hasn’t been married as her parents had come to learn that the person she was supposed to marry had already tied the knot with a Brazilian girl.
