The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed an uproar after TVK MLAs V.M.S. Mustafa and I. Thahira claimed that the Muslim community was labelled or treated as “terrorists” during past DMK regimes, allegations that were strongly rejected by DMK members, who accused the TVK legislators of attempting to disturb communal harmony and mishandling Assembly proceedings on August 25.

The DMK members rejected the allegations made by Mustafa and Thahira, describing the intervention as a political circus and maintaining that the issue had no relevance today. They also criticised the TVK for allegedly mishandling Assembly proceedings. They said, “The entire issue has no relevance today. Whatever Mustafa has spoken has not been taken up in the Assembly proceedings, is what I have learned.”

Mustafa subsequently produced certain Assembly records before the Speaker in support of the allegations made by him and Thahira against the DMK. After perusing the records, he said the matter was closed and declined to share details of the documents, citing the decorum of the House.

Earlier, Mustafa had called for the eradication of “sana tana”, echoing Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin’s speech in the Assembly, which drew criticism from Hindus.

Mustafa’s remarks about the pain and discrimination allegedly faced by the Muslim community following the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts also drew a strong response from Indu Makkal Katchi and Hindu Munnani. The organisations pointed out that Hindus were among those killed and injured in the blasts.

They said 58 people died and 200 were injured, attributing the attack to Islamic terrorism, and said families and businesses affected by the tragedy had still not recovered.

Separately, local residents in Tiruppur have raised objections over what they described as the functioning of an illegal mosque in a residential area. According to local sources, residents initially questioned the owner, who reportedly said the premises was a house before stating that his family would perform namaz there. Residents subsequently alleged that people were arriving in significant numbers for prayers and claimed that many were suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals.

Locals, supported by Hindu Munnani, have demanded action against illegal immigrants and raised concerns over the security implications of the alleged presence of foreign nationals. They questioned the establishment of a mosque in a residential locality and alleged that Tiruppur was becoming a destination for Bangladeshi and other foreign nationals.

The developments have brought separate political and local issues involving the Assembly debate, communal harmony, immigration and security into the wider public discussion in Tamil Nadu.
