IN The Angel’s Game, the hero of the novel is the book, rather a book, which is being written by protagonist David Martin, a young reporter at a local newspaper. Martin after his success with novels is made a strange offer by a Paris based editor. The novel is based in Barcelona. He commissions him to write a book that will change the life of people. Martin is also given entry into an eerie place called the ‘cemetery of forgotten books.’ He is asked to choose a book from there. As he gets down to write, he realises that the plot in the chosen book is similar to his own book. He encounters the strangest of events that nearly push him to insanity. For instance, he spends a night in the arms of a woman, who has the same name as the heroine of his novel, only to discover the next morning that the place he visited had been burned down 15 years ago. He is embroiled in several murder cases with the police hot in chase. Martin is also deep in love with a girl, but his mentor marries her. She also goes missing, with that charge also put on Martin. Finally, he is forced to leave the city, to take refuge in a seaside cottage. The book is a thriller in mind games that moves swiftly through the pages. Originally written in Spanish by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, it has been translated by Lucia Graves. -VN
