AS you may have read, the enmity between the gods and the demons continued for ever. Lord Indra once entered into a fierce battle with the demon named Vritra, who took the form of a sea-monster and drank up all the water in the seas and oceans. All the living beings on land and water began to die of thirst. For how long could they survive without this elixir of life?
Seeing the terrible situation, Indra decided to do something about it before all life perished forever. So with all his thunderous might he charged towards Vritra’s fortress. He brought the fortress down with one mighty blow of his sword and Vritra was left standing in a corner without any protection.
Now the two enemies confronted each other and began to fight which continued for days on end. Both fought valiantly but ultimately the demon was crushed and Indra emerged victorious. Indra pierced the demon’s body with his sword, following which water gushed out form the stomach of the victim with full force. This way all living creatures on sea and land were saved and Indra was hailed the most powerful God who invariably kept the interest of living creatures in mind.
