Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) urged the UPA government to formulate a concrete policy against infiltration and make serious efforts to drive the infiltrators out of the country. In a resolution adopted at the 54th national conference held at Jalgaon, Maharashtra, from January 23 to 26, the largest student organisation of the country, ABVP, also said that administration in border areas should be made strict and border security should be strengthened.
On the issue of growing terrorism, the conference said it is in favour of a decisive war against terrorism and teaching a lesson to Pakistan. At the same time, the conference also appealed to the people of the country not to weaken their agitative stance they have adopted after Mumbai attack, which can bring about a continuous pressure on the central government. The convention clearly said that the UPA government'sappeasement policy is the root cause of insecurity.
A total of 1006 delegates from 26 states of the country participated in the conference. Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the conference on January 23. New national president of ABVP Prof Milind Marathe, new general secretary Shri Vishnudatt Sharma, state president Prof Surekha Kingaokar, state general secretary Shri Prakash Belwade, president of reception committee Dr Avinash Acharya and secretary of reception committee Shri Bharat Amalkar were also present at the inaugural ceremony. A book on anti-Bangladeshi infiltration agitation was also released at the conference.
In another resolution, the conference opposed the attempt by the central government to commercilise education by bringing it under the purview of SEZ. But the government has shown no sign of deviating from its obstinacy. ?Thus, this conference demands that the government should take steps to stop commercilisation of education or be prepared to face an extremely strong agitation by students from the entire country in coming days. The conference also appeals to all political parties to formulate and declare their education policy in their manifestos before the coming Lok Sabha elections,? the resolution added.
On the government'srecent order making BDS a five-year course and scrapping the internship, the conference said it would stop the BDS students from getting hands on training, which they used to get earlier. Along with this the government has stopped the scholarship, which the students doing internship used to get. ?This decision seems to have taken under the pressure of private institutions. At present they will be taking five years fees in five years, but there is possibility of fees being raised in future. ABVP opposes this decision and demands that BDS students be given practical training in the form of internship as before and they should also be given scholarship for the internship period as before,? the resolution added.
The conference also described the economic sector scandals as the result of liberalisation. The conference demanded amendment in the Companies Act, 1956 and the minutes of Board of Directors meetings should be brought under the purview of RTI Act. ?The audit companies which are involved in such scandals should be blacklisted and the role of SEBI be made more effective and responsible. Effective implementation of trade union laws in the corporate sector should be ensured and there should also be a provision for giving rigorous punishment to the culprits who are involved in the scandals?, said the resolution on economy. The ABVP demanded a nationwide debate on the failure of present economic policy keeping in mind the wider interest of the nation and bring thorough economic reforms based on Indian economic thought.
The ABVP also condemned the UPA government deciding to enhance FDI in insurance sector from 26 per cent to 49 per cent. The UPA government is further thinking to enhance this percentage to benefit the foreign companies. ABVP opposed this type of anti-national move of the UPA government.
In his inaugural speech Shri Narendra Modi focussed on danger to democracy and national security. He suggested that the ABVP should come forward and perform a leading role. ?After Independence the majority of leaders have been doing vote bank politics, which is the only reason of growing infiltration from Bangladesh and terrorism. He said today the country needs strong and powerful leaders to protect the national interest. The leaders should not emerge only in politics, but also in educational, cultural and all other sectors, so that India can become a powerful nation,? he added. Shri Modi also added that all should come together to resolve the problem of terrorism.
Prof. Milind Marathe also announced the new executive of ABVP at the conference. Dr Payal Mago, Dr Raghuraj Kishor Tripathi, Dr Kiran Hazarika, Prof. Jaikumar and Dr Rajnish Shukla will be vice presidents. Shri Samay Bansor, Shri Ravi Kumar, Shri Ramashankar Sinha, Shri Umesh Datt and Sushri Ashwini Paranjape will be national secretaries. Shri Sunil Ambekar is organising secretary and Shri B Surendran and Shri KN Raghunandan are joint organising secretaries.
