Even though Delhi has a woman Chief Minister, thousands of women are facing acute problem of homelessness in the capital. According to an estimate, there are nearly one lakh homeless persons on any given day in Delhi, of whom ten thousand are women. There are only three shelter houses available to these homeless women, capable of accommodating roughly 100 women. Women and children tend to experience more acutely the adverse impacts of lack of adequate housing, such as increased risk of illness, starvation and physical and sexual violence. But the government claims that the existing night shelters and shelters for destitute women are under occupied in comparison to their capacity and efforts have been made to increase the occupancy.
